J & H McLaren ceased manufacturing industrial and marine diesel engine since 1959 and vacated Airedale Works in Hunslet Leeds.
This book has been produced using photographs found in a box ‘The Box’ which had been left at the factory when it closed.
Over several years A O Hunt and Henry Roskilly whose father had been chief draftsman at the McLaren Midland Engineering Works, studied each of the photographs in detail identifying a huge amount of information regarding the products and their locations throughout the world. With this information the photographs ‘came to life’ and Hunt and Roskilly decided to publish so that others may have the opportunity to view them.
Many of the photographs in the book were taken in the Midland Engine Works yard by professional photographers for archive and publicity purposes. Others were taken by McLaren representatives when working abroad.
All the photographs in ‘The Box’ have been included in the book regardless of quality from 120 format prints and negatives to full glass plates. The books has been printed in full colour to preserve the character and mellow tones seen on old photographs.
Information on the backs of the photographs have been included. These show drawing office remarks, official stamps together with sketches of customer requirements.
All this produced beautiful book full of wonderful photographs of Steam Engines, Agricultural Tractors, Agricultural Machinery and implements many at work around the world. That truly show the contribution of McLaren to worldwide agriculture.
