A Farming Case Study is a detailed two-part documentary series following a year with David Black & Son Ltd, a large arable and pig rearing enterprise from Suffolk. The main focus is on the 1300ha (3200 acre) arable operation, but the programmes also touch on the pigs and use archive images to illustrate some of the farm’s fascinating history.
It’s mostly heavy land on the farm, so combinable crops including wheat, barley and oilseed rape are the order of the day. But sugar beet is also an extremely important crop, with an extensive area grown.
The majority of machinery used is from the Case IH stable, with Puma and Quadtrac tractors favoured, but a variety of other makes are shown and over 40 machines are featured in total over the course of the two programmes. The series should appeal equally to farm machinery enthusiasts and farming professionals, with something for every level of interest.
Part two begins halfway through harvest in early August and goes on to deal with cultivations, drilling, autumn crop protection and sugar beet harvesting.
