The definition of a compact utility
tractor as we know it has somewhat
evolved over the years. The standard
definition has usually been a small
tractor (under 40 horsepower) with a
weight somewhere under 2,000 pounds
that is capable of breaking ground and
also handling a number of attachments.
In recent years, horsepower for
definity compacts has been increased to
50 horsepower. A new series of the
compact has also emerged in the form of
a subcompact tractor that is little
more than a garden tractor in size, but
still offers a wide range of
attachments that makes it a true work-
horse for any small job.
This book explains the history of these
small compacts, their implements, and
the small tractor in general with major
focus on the introduction of what is
known as the “modern” compact tractor
in the 1970’s. In America, small
tractors for the farm used to be
exclusive to companies like Allis
Chalmers, International Harvester,
Massey Ferguson and John Deere. Now,
that same industry is a crowded field
with the likes of Mihindra, Kioti,
Yanmar, LS and Kubota, just to name a
few.
