The eight-wheeled rigid dominated the
British transport scene for decades,
with a peak from the early post-war
years up to the late 1960s. Few
vehicles can look quite as impressive
as a nicely liveried rigid eight, as
the superb colour photographs in this
book reveal.
The photographs are all of rigid eights
at work during the 1960s and ’70s,
showing a cross-section of the most
popular types including the AEC Mk III
and the Mk IV. The Leyland Octopus is
present in its many guises from the
22.0/1 to the Ergomatic and such
classics as the ‘bow front’ Atkinsons
and S18 cabbed Fodens are included. The
photographs also include manufacturers
such as Seddon which were in decline
and Dodge which were only briefly in
the market.
The liveries were varied, but
distinctively British. Such legendary
names as Holt Lane Transport, R Hanson,
BRS, Sutton’s and Tayforth are just a
few examples of the famous liveries
featured.
