We travelled down to the bottom of the
Ard’s peninsula and went looking for
one of John Dan O’Hare’s combines,
which was hard at work on a 1000 acre
estate outside the little town of
Portaferry. His son Danny was driving
it, cutting 400 acres of wheat and
barley with his New Holland combine and
17 foot header and when he had
finished, he had to catch a ferry
across to Strangford to save him an
eighty mile journey by road. When he
got off the ferry he made his way back
through the beautiful countryside and
on through Downpatrick and Castlewellan
and then to the yard, which took about
two and a half hours.
On one of our Journeys down South we
called at Country Crest at the Hoey
family farm to see what they were
working at and we met up with Cahal and
Karl, who were starting to spray some
of the crops. They had just taken
procession of a new Challenger Rogater
5000 litre self-propelled sprayer with
a thirty meter boom and they also used
the Chafer 5000 litre trailed sprayer,
which was pulled by a Fendt 820 and it
also had a thirty meter boom.
Things were going well in Athy in Co
Kildare at Roger Perry’s farm as they
were hard at work with two of their
three combines cutting the harvest. It
was all hands on deck on this beautiful
day and as Roger works with everything
New Holland, even the Baler that came
into the field was a also a New
Holland; a lovely sight to see in this
scenic part of the country straddling
the border of Co Kilkenny.
It wouldn’t be complete unless we
called with John Dan O’Hare, at his
yard up in Co Down, and what a stroke
of luck as John Dan and all his family
were getting seven of his nine Combines
ready for cutting the next morning as a
lot of his customers were looking for
him to cut their crops the next morning
while the weather stayed fine. So now
he will take them down the road to cut
some of his own fields first and check
that every machine is cutting. What a
lovely sight to see all this activity
in the one field. Quite a number of
people came along to see this unusual
sight.
