Mick Waite chronicles, by marque, the
evolution of the recovery vehicle in
the UK over the last 40 years. Retired
road haulage vehicles, ex heavy haulage
tractors and ex military trucks – such
as the legendary Diamond T – often
equipped with the ubiquitous Holmes or
Harvey Frost fulfilled the major part
of the industry’s heavier needs up to
the 1980s and are well featured. Light
& medium weight units on chassis such
as Bedford & Ford are also represented
as are the American chassis
manufacturers Autocar, Kenworth, Mack,
Oshkosh & Peterbilt. In the 1980s the
underlift gained ground & attractive
bodywork and liveries based on modern
chassis really began to feature and the
book parallels that fact. As for the
units of today – based on chassis such
as the Scania Series 4, Volvo FH and
the Foden Improved Mobility unit –
these also have not been overlooked.
Also includes illustrated features on
recovery techniques & incidents,
concluding with a colour section of the
classic trucks of the industry – past
and present. 168 pages. 280 b/w and 24
colour illustrations. hardback.
