Back in 2008 in John Deere Volume 5 we
visited the Gaynor Farm in Co
Tipperary
where they were sowing a relatively
new
crop Miscanthus (elephant grass). In
volume 9 we re-visit the Gaynor Farm
and we see a Big John Deere 7700 Self
Propelled Harvester with a 6 row
Kemper
Maize header. We then head into an 8
acre field of Miscanthus where we see
a
new John Deere 6150R tractor drawing a
20ft Smith trailer. The crop is
usually grown in Africa and Southern
Asia but grows just as well in
Ireland.
It has been trialled in Europe since
the early 1980s and can grow to about
8ft in length with leaves. It has a
rapid growth rate and it’s low mineral
content and high bio mass yield makes
it a good choice for bio fuels.
We see a Big John Deere 6930 pulling a
Redrock trailer. When the crop was
sown 5 years ago it yielded 600 kilos
to the acre and is now yielding at 6
tonne to the acre. It will be cut
every year for 25 years. Once cut it
will lie there all summer into the
Autumn when they will be compacted
into
briquettes to burn at Christmas in the
fire.
We then visit County Louth and the
Hanlon family who harvest acres of
cereals and spring barley. We see a
John Deere T670 auto steer combine
with
a 25ft header. We also see a Volvo
FH460 lorry and Fruehauf tipping
trailer from Hanlon Transport, a John
Deere 6210R tractor with a Big Massey
Ferguson 185 Baler. We see them
working through the night, under
pressure, to get as much cut as
possible.
We leave them and then travel to Co
Down to visit the John Dan O’Hare
family who are nearing the end of the
harvest. We see a John Deere 6610 and
old Welger Baler which he shows to a
neighbour and explains how to produce
small bales. There are a few more
fields to be baled and the boys decide
to play a trick on John Dan and take a
group of John Deeres and balers. We
see them leaving the yard to meet in
the same field with a John Deere 6930
and Lely Welger Baler, John Deere 6910
and Tedder, John Deere 6930 and McHale
baler, John Deere 6930 and McHale
baler, John Deere 7810 with a Claas
baler, John Deere 6170 pulling a Claas
baler, John Deere 6810 with a kane
bale
trailer. John Dan is surprised to see
so much machinery in the field and
enjoys standing back to watch all this
machinery at work.
We then see 5 round balers, a tedder
and a conventional baler all working
together in one field. We watch them
gathering the bales to put them into a
trailer to take them back to the yard.
After the baling we go across a few
fields to where Joe O’Hare and another
team have been foraging. We see a
Volvo L90E with a 12 ft rake on the
front compacting the silage in
readiness for further loads to be
dumped. They deal with 15 thousand
acres each season and need good strong
equipment for the job.
