Family Affairs – Illustrated Histories of Haulage Contractors from Somerset and Dorset
This book is a comprehensive narrative of the history and development of local transport hauliers in Somerset and Dorset. The primary industry of both these areas has been agriculture for centuries and the most obvious reason for the existence and growth of the number of fleets on the road has been in response to the need to transport these agricultural products. However, both Somerset and Dorset also lay claim to quarries, sand and gravel pits as well as a number of other industries that may not be so readily apparent today; as a result, the roads were once absolutely full with private hauliers sporting vehicles stamped with their family names.
Two World Wars and a period of nationalisation, coupled with decreased industrial output and increased road taxation and fuel costs, have had varying impacts on the amount of small to medium-sized transport contractors on the road. With stunning period photographs of the vehicles used and informative text concerning the development of the transport industry, this book is sure to be a delight. It also includes 20 pages of fleet listings at the end of the book.
