Wynns was founded in 1863 by Thomas Wynn. From the early days, Wynns has specialised in moving difficult and spectacular loads. The first ‘low-loader’ designed to carry 40 tons was aquired in 1890. It was used to carry heavy equipment for Lysaghts Steel Works at Newport, later to become the Orb Works of British Steel.
It was during the following century that Wynns went on to develop their heavy haulage techniques, including hydraulic suspension trailers on pneumatic tyres, the ‘hovercraft’ air suspension principle, operated with a double swan-neck girder trailer and modular trailer systems capable of carrying loads up to 1000 tons.
This book is a collection of pictures taken from calendars produced in the 1950s and 60s as promotional items. The photographs are taken mainly in Britain but include others from around the world. There are some horse-drawn and steam-powered examples leading up to more modern scenes including the very latest barge transporters.
