When we arrived at the Aughnafarcon to
Castleblayney road just a few miles
outside of Castleblayney in Co Monaghan
on Sunday 2 June 2013, it led us to an
eight acre field of grass which was
ready for cutting. We were invited to
film the grass cutting with the Border
Counties Vintage Grassmen’s Club. They
were here preparing to cut the field.
But this was no ordinary grass cutting
event. They were going to put on a
nostalgia event for the large crown of
people that turned up from all parts of
Ireland to take part and also to watch
the event. Some of the grass would be
cut with horse drawn mowing machines
and some with tractors and mowing bars
driven by Castleblayney’s most famous
sons. Ireland’s famous country and
western singer Big Tom, who brought
along his Massey 35 and Wuffler hay
making machine and gave a demonstration
with it. This, with other
demonstrations, including single chop
harvesters and mowing bars along with
some rare hay turners and a large
vintage machinery demonstration, made
it a very memorable day at the “Old
Time Silage Making Event” and a lot of
money raised went to the Alzheimer’s
unit at St Mary’s Hospital in
Castleblayney.
